THE PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA


 Every society across the globe has its peculiar problems and challenges. Nigeria as a developing country, she faces her own share of social, political, economic and cultural problems which has in measure affected the well-being of the populace. One of the problems bedeviling the country is youth unemployment which accounts for the rising wave of the crimes with serious implications for socio-economic development of the nation. In Nigeria, unemployment has become one of the most serious socio-economic problems especially during this period of economic crunch. It has been a problem confronting the lives of the youth leading to poverty, frustration, defection and dependent on family members and friends who also have their own problems to contend with. Nigeria is endowed with abundant deposit of natural resources such as oil, mineral resources, agricultural products and human resources, yet majority of her population lack decent means of livelihood or are unemployed and are wallowing in poverty with its attendant social, economic, political and psychological consequences (Ogwuibe and Olorunfemi, 2018). Unemployment is one of the developmental problems that bedeviled every developing economy in the twenty-first century. International statistics portray that industrial and service workers living in developing regions accounts for about two-thirds of the unemployed. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s population is said to have reached about 167 million people in 2012. The National Population Commission (NPC 2103) states that about half of the population is made up of youth, which is defined as individuals between 18 and 35 years of age. Akande (2014) states that, as the youth population grow, the unemployment rises. In fact, unemployed youth numbered about 11.1 million in2012. In fact, the youth are one of the greatest assets that any nation can have and, therefore need to be developed and empowered. They serve as a good measure of the extent to which a country can reproduce as well as sustain itself. The youth have been described as the greatest investment for a country’s development (National Youth Policy of Nigeria 2001). UNEMPLOYMENT

The term unemployment refers to a situation where a person actively searches for employment but is unable to find work. Unemployment is considered to be a key measure of the health of the economy. According to Alanana (2003), unemployment refers to a situation where people who are willing and capable of working are unable to find suitable paid employment.
